Second part of the Oxford pics! We're moving on from the Harry Potter theme to those of Alice in Wonderland and Tolkien, both being very close to my heart, as I told you
here and
there. The fact that Tolkien was an Oxford don and spent a big part of his life there is quite well-known, but you might not know that Lewis Carroll (
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was his real name) was teaching mathematics in Oxford and that he was inspired by the daughter of Henry Lyddell, the Christ Church Dean, to create his most famous character, Alice. There are numerous references to the books in Christ Church and around, starting by the Alice shop on St Aldate's, right across the street from Christ Church.
Deuxième partie des photos d'Oxford, cette fois-ci on quitte le monde d'Harry Potter pour aller vers celui d'Alice au Pays des Merveilles et de Tolkien, deux sujets chers à mon coeur comme je l'ai déjà évoqué ici et là.
Le fait que Tolkien était professeur à Oxford et y a passé une grande partie de sa vie est connu, mais vous ne savez peut-être pas que Lewis Carroll (de son vrai nom Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) était professeur de mathématiques et s'est inspiré de la fille du doyen de Christ Church, Henry Lyddell, pour créer son personnage d'Alice. Il y a de nombreuses références à ces livres dans le quartier de Christ Church, à commencer par la boutique d'Alice sur St Aldgate's, juste en face du College.

and in the chimneys, where the elongated firedogs are known to have inspired Alice's transformations when she eats or drinks in Wonderland.
mais également dans les cheminées, où les personnages qui ornent les grilles du foyer ont inspiré certaines des transformations de la jeune fille.
But the most important association with Oxford as far as I'm concerned is undoubtedly Tolkien. We had planned on visiting his grave in the Catholic cemetery, but unfornately, the closing hours in winter were different from the ones the tourist board gave us and we found the gates closed. But we still took some time to visit some important locations all around the city (if you ever go to Oxford and are interested in such things, the tourist board provides "authors' tours" sheets, that enable you to find key places relating to this or that author). It was already dark and the pictures were for memory sake than really worth showing, but below is one of the houses Tolkien inhabited when he was writing The Lord of the Rings (the red door).
Mais pour moi, l'assocation la plus importante avec la ville d'Oxford, c'est bien sûr Tolkien. Nous voulions aller visiter sa tombe au cimetière catholique, malheureusement les horaires d'ouverture en hiver ne correspondaient pas à ceux donnés par l'office du tourisme et nous avons trouvé les grilles fermées. Mais nous avons quand même pris le temps de voir les lieux clés de la ville dans la vie de l'auteur (si jamais vous allez à Oxford et que ça vous intéresse, l'office du tourisme propose plusieurs "parcours d'auteurs" qui vous permettent de trouver les lieux importants liés à tel ou tel personnage). Il faisait sombre et les photos ont plus valeur de souvenirs que d'exposition, mais ci-dessous, vous pouvez voir une des maisons dans lesquelles Tolkien a vécu à l'époque où il écrivait Le Seigneur des Anneaux (la porte rouge).
And finally, we couldn't possibly end our day in Oxford with paying a visit to the pub The Eagle and Child, aka The Bird and Baby. It was there that on Tuesdays, Tolkien, CS Lewis, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield and all the members of "
The Inklings " gathered to drink and talk. To say that this place played a role in the shaping of 20th century English literature is no understatement, and though the pub has changed a lot since those days, the "Rabbit Room" where they met still shows memorabilia of those days (and the cider is really good!!)
Enfin, nous ne pouvions pas quitter Oxford sans aller au pub The Eagle and Child, alias The Bird and Baby. C'est là que se réunissaient tous les mardis les membres des Inklings, Tolkien bien sûr, mais aussi CS Lewis, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield et bien d'autres. Dire que ce lieu fut l'un des berceaux de la litérature anglaise du vingtième siècle n'est pas exagéré, et même si le pub a beaucoup changé depuis, la "Rabbit Room" porte encore des souvenirs de cette époque (et le cidre est super bon!!).

And here's our mascot, the infamous Lilith the Heffalump (very long story, it's enough to say here that this heffalump is the compulsory companion of all of Minnie's and mine escapades and adventures), in presence of the Master.
Et là, c'est notre mascotte, Lilith l'Effélant (c'est une longue histoire, mais disons que cette bestiole nous accompagne partout et aime de faire prendre en photo aux quatre coins du monde!), en présence du Maître.
